This week's assignments

Hello to everyone,

This week we discussed about the relation between the use of Multimedia and Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences as well as about Cooperative Learning.
Your blog post this week will be about these topics. I will share with you some materials and you can make a reflection on them.

Part one Cooperative Learning
Part two Cooperative Learning
Cooperative learning

Do not forget Project Based Learning research and the materials that you have to share on the Padlet. Since you are all going to work on a Project, it is advisable that you read what are the benefits of using PBL in the classroom and what is the latest research in relation to PBL. The links for the Padlet are attached here and on the Class website as well. I have already shared the first material with you. There is no need to use the Dropbox this week.

Padlet Group A

Padlet Group B

A list of resources that will help you to decide the topic of your Projects. Please you have to write the group pairs as soon as possible, otherwise you will be left with only a few weeks time to prepare.

Assignments for this week

Let's get back to work now!

I guess you all have read the assignment for this week, which is again one week behind schedule! Therefore, I have thought to merge two weeks in one as you can see below:

Week 3
16 March – 20 March

Create some exercises with online exercise generators and publish them on the website under the relevant page.
Read about ABCD objectives model and post your own model, referring to the exercises that you created yourself. There should be at least 3 different exercises (e.g. crosswords, gap filling, multiple choice etc.)
Post and Comment on your Blog.

Week 4
23 March – 27 March

Start keeping an online journal of what you are planning and what are your thoughts and reflections about your teaching experience with the use of technology. Document and report on the new tools you plan to use and the expected results of the implementation.
Post and Comment on your Blog.

The deadline for these assignment is the 30th of march (midnight)

Starting with Week 4 - the Journal writing. The purpose of the Journal is not to duplicate the Blog. The journal should be more like a recording of the process of your learning and working for this classroom. It is also a good tool that you can use with your students in the future to improve their writing skills. There are some online Journals that you can create but I would suggest that we all use
Penzu and in the end of the class you will share with me your entries in the diary (so do not spill all the beans!). A new way of assessment to avoid subjectivity and fairness is by documenting the process of the learning rather than one final assessment of the product. So, record in the journal the process of your learning.

Now let us discuss about the assignment of Week - 3, the writing of the objectives. You know that completing a task successfully needs careful planning. Teaching, particularly, requires a lot of planning and it is very time consuming (Welcome to the real world of teachers! :-), so we need to design our objectives before we start with the planning and designing of the lesson. Who are my students, what are their abilities and knowledge, what I would like them to learn, and how am I going to measure their learning process. One way of writing objectives is by using the ABCD (Audience, Behaviour, Condition and Degree) model. ABCD model
Perhaps you might have heard about them before but now you are going to write your own objectives for a classroom that you will teach in the future. You will need to write three different objectives for three different types of activities/exercises that your are going to create.

Master students of English language (Audience) after reading about ABCD objectives (Condition) should be able to write (Behaviour) three objectives of their own (Degree).

Now comes the tricky part and the one that you are going to find more challenging: creating your own exercises or your own tests. There are a lot of ready made worksheets available on the internet by they do not alway reflect the content of your teaching, so sometimes there is a need for you to generate your own exercises. One exercise generator is the Hot Potatoes, where you can create a gap filling exercise, a crossword, an online multiple choice etc. There is a tutorial available on the homepage of Hot Potatoes.
Your ABCD objectives will be written for the exercises that your will have to generate yourself. Check the class website (under Useful links, Exercise generator) for some more information.
And the very last thing for this week is the Dropbox. It plays the same function as Google Drive, it is just another way of sharing your information online and sharing it with others. When you create your exercises you can import them on a document and together with the exercise, you write the objective and in the end you share it with me on the Dropbox.
The links for the Dropbox are on the Class website under the page with the same name. I am also attaching them here.
Sorry, there is one more thing but not to do for this week but to think. Start and discuss with each other to form pairs and let me know about them later.
I was also thinking to have a video or an audio conference with each other for all the questions that I anticipate coming as arrows from the moment that I publish this post. What do you think about Wednesday at 12 o'clock with Group A and 2 o'clock with Group B or let me know when it is best for you.
I think that is all for this week. I promise that the first weeks are the ones that require a lot of work.

Have a nice week,
T.

Congratulations!

Hi,

Firstly and most importantly a big applause for you allπŸ‘. I just finished reading all your posts and comments. It is impossible to comment each individual post, however, I will try to make my own reflection based on what I read and perceived from your posts and comments.

As far as the quality of your posts is concerned, I would like to point out that some of them really stood out and you had also realised it, by congratulating your friends and by pointing out what you really liked about those posts, so now you all have an idea of what is a good post. Keep them as an example of good practice and reflect on them to improve your own posts in the future. When it comes to the comments, I would like to stress once more that by agreeing with your friend's ideas, you also to have to tell us the reason why and explain more about it. Please keep this in mind for the upcoming weeks.
There is another thing that I would like you to change, for those that have not followed the instructions of the first post closely. All your blogs should be name as Name Surname Group A/B. This helps me identify you by the name and the group and it facilitates my grading and reading them. Please edit your names.

However, there are also a few lines that I would like to share with you (so bear with me a little longer this time πŸ˜“). As a matter of fact, we all live under the same sky and we are all faced with the same problems and challenges. The change of roles and positions does not change the reality at all, it just brings with it different roles and responsibilities.

When it comes to the importance of technology and integrating it into our classrooms, I do not necessarily associate it with the current situation and the online learning that we are trying to do. This is not the best of the solutions but it is the only solution that we have for the moment, as everything unfolded so fast and none of us predicted this. Online learning requires a lot of planning and training and the use of the Blogger or the Google Classroom are not designed to support online education.

Nevertheless, this course was designed to have a balance between face-to-face learning and online communication and collaboration. The use of the Blogger as a communication platform has proven to be successful and satisfactory during these years and students have enjoyed it. It is a platform where students can reflect on this new experience and share their opinions or any other information, as it allows you to share with a link, image or a video. It is also part of the Google apps, like Google Classroom (which works better for assignments and handing them in to be graded by the teacher). There are certainly other platforms and apps, which might be more efficient and appealing but you need to pay for them.
Having in mind that we all live in the same country and I am well aware of the limitations that this brings with it, we have tried to design the course based on what we can equally access. The internet connection has always been a problem and it will be, the lack of laptops/PC is always an issue and the list of problems can be a never ending one just like anything else in our lives. This takes us to how we would prefer to see the glass as half full or full; are we pessimistic about anything that challenges us or are going to tackle it with optimism. I am more of a fighter type and I am not easily overcome by challenges and difficulties. I try to make the most of any situation and be happy with the little things and make use of them efficiently. Even thought recording the videos and uploading them on the internet took me several hours, I still did not give up as I could hear your concerns that night when it was the deadline.
Mentioning the deadlines, the use of technology means that we become assume more responsibilities as learners and we become more independent. We manage our time better and once there is an issue we can face it from the beginning and not leaving things for the last minute. Cooperating and collaborating with each other is also another benefit of technology. The teacher is not any more the leader but they are facilitators of the learning process and remember we do not have special abilities like "mind reading" or "telepathy". If you do not communicate your problems and challenges, I will never know how to help you.

One last thing that some of your mentioned in your posts: improving your writing skills. Consider the posts that you make as a chance to improve better your English skills. We are not native speakers but we required to have native like proficiency of the language, if you want to compete in the market. Therefore, mind your spelling, your sentence structure and your correct use of English. Most importantly avoid plagiarism.

Thank you for all the good work and the effort that you have put during the first two weeks.

Bear in mind the following:

Video on the blog

This is a video that explains a few things about your Blog. However there are a lot of videos on YouTube that can help you as well.
If you have more questions please let me know.
I will post another video with some instructions on the Website where you can find the information and how to interpret your assignments.

The quality of the video is not very good it is a bit blurry, the reason for that is that Blogger does not allow for more than 100 MB size of attachment.

Keep in touch

P.S if you find the video helpful we will try to proceed this way.

Hello again

Hi everyone,

I hope that you and your families are in good health.
I have seen that almost all of you have listed their blogs and opened them, however, this is part of the task of week 1 and we are already in week 2 or better to say half way in week 2.

Now that you are more familiar with the blog I am submitting here again the link for the assignments and the deadlines for those who perhaps have not found them on the class website.

Class Calendar and Assignments

Meanwhile, I would like all of you (both groups) to post within Wednesday (midnight) their first post, which will be about any difficulties that you have encountered so far and what are your thoughts about this new way of teaching and learning. This might be the future!!!

Now all of us can relate to the current situation and it goes without saying that knowledge about how to integrate technology in teaching is of great importance.

Watch this video on YouTube about 10 reasons why we should integrate technology in the classroom and add some more benefits that you can think of or any disadvantages.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mzi2RIt8_nk

You also have two more readings about the use of technology and the latest findings about them, which will be integrated in your post.

Recent Developments in Technology and Language Learning.pdf

Technology in language teaching.pdf

The link below will direct you to the class website under the page (Forms and Docs) where you can check the Blog assessment rubric, so you have an idea how your posts will be assessed. You will be assessed for every week and for all assignments that you have to submit during this class.

Forms and Docs

All of your are required to post every week and comment at least one of the posts that your friends have made. So, for Wednesday midnight all of you should post and comment. Your comments should not be only (I agree... it is nice... it is good....) if you agree or disagree with the post of your friend and the reasons why you agree or you find it interesting.

If you still have any questions please comment on my post. Do not forget to subscribe to my blog with the emails, so you can be notified as soon as there is a new post.

Have a nice evening,
T

Hello Class 2020

Hello to everyone,

First, I would like to wish you and your families to be in good health and safe.

Since the school is suspended for two weeks, I think it is better if we continue and work as these are all assignments that we will have to complete sooner or later. Rather than rushing in the end, you could all work at your own pace from home.

Let me explain a few things about this course. We will mainly deal with the integration of technology in teaching English as a second language. Everything that you have learned so far about teaching methodology will have to include an additional element and that it technology. Anything can count as technology, a video, a song, an image, PPT presentation or anything taken from internet and making use of it in the classroom.

I have sent for you all two emails. One of them will give you access to the website that I have created for this classroom. It is a simple website with the features that any website has. There is a dropdown menu and there you can see the Course Calendar and Assignments that you will have to complete during this course.
Your assignment for the first week  is to open a Blog and then register it next to your name and your email list.
This blog will be the platform where we will communicate with each other. On my blog you can see two boxes, one for follow and the other for follow by email. Click on both of them so any time there is a new post you can read it there.
Then if you have any questions, just post them here on the blog and then we can answer each other.
For the address of your Blogger, write your name surname group A or B 2020 and follow each other and your own blog. Once you have all created a Blogger it will be easier for us to communicate.

For those students who do not have a Gmail account yet, you will have to open one. The Blogger is a Google app and you can find under those little dots on the side of your screen. Do not forget to follow me. My blog address is on both documents with your emails. You can register you blog address on the right column and click on each other's blog addresses and follow them. Don't forget to follow your own blog.

We will be in touch virtually for some time, I can tell.

The link below is a video tutorial about the Blog, how to open one.

This link will also direct you to a document with instructions how to open the Blog.
